I have been on this journey into tech for quite some time now. I started learning about coding and computer science back in March 2021 when I enrolled in my first course at a local college. It has been an interesting ride, to say the least. I have touched on the surface of so many different languages, technologies, and concepts in the past 2 years. Some of the languages include Python, Java, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, SQL, and PHP. Other concepts have been in project management, networking, cloud computing, and cybersecurity. I realized that I wanted to focus more on becoming a software engineer and that I’d target the front-end for now, though I am still interested in learning the back-end.
When I first started learning about tech, I quickly became inundated with all the information people have out there. It seems like every time I logged onto Twitter, LinkedIn, or Instagram all I would see are posts saying “How to become a web developer in 6 months”, “project manager is the way to transition into tech”, “cybersecurity is the new thing”, and many more like it. It all was so overwhelming and I felt that I was just going down a rabbit hole and also was having FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out). I felt that I needed to know and do all the things to be successful and to make that transition into technology. Thankfully I was wrong.
I am grateful that I came across different mentors who have been able to help me break down and conceptualize what it is I want to do. Once I got down what my goals were, it was much easier to clear out the noise of what was being said out there and to align myself with communities and opportunities that will help with making my career transition from social worker to software engineer. I still have a way to go but I know that this is my journey and it will take the time it needs for me to become the best equip software engineer I can be.
