GRIT: What every Programmer should possess.

During these few weeks of learning Javascript, with some HTML and CSS basics on my own in preparation for Altschool Africa resumption next month, I have come to understand the impact of being gritty.

According to Angela Lee Duckworth, Grit is passion and perseverance for LONG TERM goals. It’s about having stamina. Grit is sticking with your future, day in day out, not just for the week, not just for the month, but for years, working hard to make the future a reality.

Being intentional and passionate about what you want, then CONSISTENTLY working towards achieving that goal is a great skill to possess. It’s not limited to programming alone. I’m not one that easily gives up but there were times I get overwhelmed during my course of learning and I believe it’s normal because some senior developers I interacted with mentioned going through this phase too but do you have the grit to continue pursuing that dream of yours?

Here are a few tips that have and are still helping me stay on track in my learning. I hope this helps someone out there struggling with their learning.

Study and code every day even if it’s just for 15mins.

Whenever you get stuck on a problem and the solution is not forthcoming, take a break and the solution will come at the time you least expect it. you might be doing the dishes and boom your diffuse brain delivers the solution to you😄.

Just have it at the back of your mind that a day will come when you will feel overwhelmed. It’s normal. every successful developer went through that phase.

Interact with people in your niche and ask questions when you are confused about a particular concept. But first, try your best to tackle the problem, google if it’s beyond you and when you are not satisfied with the answers you got on google, you can go ahead and ask someone.

Like i said earlier, I’m still learning and working towards being world-class. it’s not going to be easy but with GRIT, and of course God’s grace, we shall all get to where we want to be.

Happy coding!!!
